Oysters in the Pass is a vibrant public art initiative spearheaded by Pass Christian Main Street to celebrate the city’s deep-rooted connection to the natural oyster reefs of the Mississippi Sound. This project aims to install a series of artistically painted oyster sculptures throughout Pass Christian, enhancing the city’s cultural landscape and fostering community pride.
The project offers a unique platform for artists to contribute their creativity. Artists are invited to submit designs to the Oysters in the Pass Design Committee, which will review and present selected artworks to community sponsors for adoption. Each fiberglass oyster sculpture stands approximately 53 inches tall with a 36-inch base and weighs around 45 pounds. The number of sculptures brought to life will depend on the level of community sponsorship secured.
Community members and businesses have the opportunity to sponsor these sculptures, playing a pivotal role in bringing this artistic vision to fruition. The sponsorship fee for each oyster sculpture is $2,500, with an initial down payment of $1,000 due upon agreement and the remaining $1,500 payable by June 30, 2024, prior to installation. While sponsors may suggest preferred locations for their sponsored sculptures, final placement will be determined by the Pass Christian Board of Alderpersons and the Oysters in the Pass Team to ensure optimal integration into the city’s landscape.
The installation of these oyster sculptures is scheduled for the summer of 2024, following the final selection of art and locations in the spring. This timeline allows for meticulous planning and collaboration among artists, sponsors, and city officials to ensure the project’s success. By participating in Oysters in the Pass, both artists and sponsors contribute to a lasting legacy that honors Pass Christian’s historical ties to oyster harvesting while enriching the community’s public spaces with engaging and meaningful art.
